Have you ever had an argument with someone, only to gain perspective later, feeling apologetic or regretful? What if you could have that same perspective during the heated argument? This is mindfulness. It is present perspective. Through learning how to become mindful, you will begin to experience yourself and the situations in your life with more awareness.
The Science: 95% of our actions are controlled by our subconscious. For instance, if you were to step into oncoming traffic, in that moment do you think you would be able to feel a mosquito biting your leg? Chances are you would be unable to hear or feel anything because your brain shifts it’s full focus into flight, fight, or freeze mode. This is also known as your reptilian brain, the part of our brain we share with the animal planet. This is the same part of our brain that gets activated when we get into an argument, limiting our perspective and enabling us to hear, feel, or see the other person.
When we are able to slow down the process of living, we can activate multiple parts of our brain simultaneously, allowing us to have instant perspective, something usually only available to us later when the situation has passed and we have calm down or are out of harms way.
